Rainbow

Agreed, life isn't a bed of roses But foolproof is nothing Not even death. There ain't no heap of problems That wouldnt collapse with a cup of tea Life is still very beautiful If you can get a good night's sleep Break the white into pieces And you ll see a rainbow of colours Sing along, Even if u dont know the songs You will hit the right note After many a wrongs. Look for happiness within, For its no one's wealth but yours.

Women's Day

International Women's Day With international women's day just around the corner, I cannot but help feeling special. Newspapers and internet are flooded with posts and women's-day-discount ads. Soon whatsapp will be filled with flattering messages about how woman is the mother, the daughter, the sister, the wife and how she must be venerated. Also, there will be talks (by men) about how woman is an equal and how she is a perfect competition to man. And that's where my question arises. Why are we always gauging woman with the yardstick called man? Why do we always talk about woman 'empowerment' as if we were the weaker section of the society and need a strong male hand for our upliftment? Why can't have more discussion on reciprocal respect? Thankfully, as a breath of fresh air, I heard a presentation on similar lines at our school Women's Day special assembly (conducted by the men folk in the school). I do not want to get into all the sexist dis...

Brainwashed

It was an ordinary day. Mom and I were having our usual mini tea session before I leave for work. While flipping the pages of newspaper, mom came across the news that few young women were going to renounce the material world and opt for the path of lifelong celibacy.   Me and my family members were all surprised to know about this and were wondering that what could possibly have made these young women decide to renounce the material world at this young age? Was it their personal decision? Maybe yes, but the question still remains as to why does a person want to renounce the very world in which he is meant to live and enjoy in? The only answer I can derive is “brainwashed”. When a person from a very young age is constantly told the stories of how giving up the pleasure of life can lead one to salvation and so called “moksh” the person is bound to get attracted to the idea of choosing that path. The elders around the kid are so blindly influenced by the society that they do...

Scientific Temper

Mohammed, a lanky little 11 year old in my school, has been granted permission to use the elevator for this entire month. Also, one of the peons carries his bag up to his classroom. Very considerate of the school to give this kind of treatment to child who is fasting, I was impressed. But on second thoughts, why should that 11 year old be fasting in the first place? Once at school, with the amount of physical and mental activity a child has on his plate, it becomes extremely essential that he eats every two hours. I think it’s no one but the parents who are to be blamed for this kind of inhuman action of starving a little boy the entire day. Isn’t food always listed as the first basic necessity for any human? With Paryusan just around the corner, I am already dreading meeting parents who will flaunt about their 2 and 3 year old kids doing “atthai” (8 consecutive days of fasting wherein you are allowed to drink only boiled water and not even that after sunset). Is it so difficult...

Battle

You Were my desire You Were in my prayer You Were at that door half-shut That door half-open. My feet My heart would rush But my mind would hold me back from crossing that threshold Suddenly A strong wind Suddenly A very cold wind Suddenly Slapped the door in my face I can't ever enter again. Peace! I smile to myself The battle between my mind and heart Has come to an end.

A Somalian fisherman is accused of being a pirate and arrested by the French Police.
